Anderton Primary School Centenary
NEWS AND EVENTS
Peter Pan at the Lowry 16th December 2010
WOW! THAT WAS QUITE SIMPLY FANTASTIC!
School closed for the day and all staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed the grand finale to our Centenary Year celebrations.
The musical theatre production was incredible, with superb acting, singing, dancing, acrobatics, special effects and even a live orchestra. The children were beside themselves with excitement and will remember that day for the rest of their lives.
All the children showed the highest standard of behaviour and were complimented on this by the staff at the Lowry. We are extremely proud of them.
(A Centenary Brochure is currently being written as a souvenir of the Year and some children's memories of the Peter Pan trip will be included.)
CENTENARY REUNION
Over 200 visitors attended our special centenary reunion on Sunday 10th October. The sun shone and it was lovely to see so many people remeniscing in school and recalling so many memories about their time at Anderton. Our oldest visitor was 91!
A special thanks to the Centenary Committee who organised the event, to the many staff who supported the event on the day and to the children who attended as current ambassadors of the school.
CENTENARY WEEK
CENTENARY WEEK WAS INCREDIBLE AND THE CHILDREN HAD ENORMOUS FUN, (as did the teachers!)
We had Edwardian lessons with very scary teachers, clog dancing, accordian playing, maypole dancing, Lancashire dialect poetry, music hall entertainment from Y6 and Art workshops focussing on artists from different decades of the last century. Phew!
Then there was the Edwardian Day itself - WHAT A DAY THAT WAS!
Edwardian Day
Last Friday in the afternoon we went on the field in our Edwardian clothes because it was school's centenary. First we went to the chairoplanes. When I got off them I felt very dizzy because it kept going round and round.
Then we waited until Year 6 got off the carousel. On the carousel I went on a horse and had a race with Adam who was on a chicken.
Then we went on the donkey ride. I went on the brown donkey called Treacle. Then we asked if we could go on the swing boats.
It was a brilliant day. Before we went home I said to Mrs Harrison "If this is a dream I don't want to wake up!"

Further reports on the day, and a selection of photos courtesy of Mark Hollinshead (thanks Mark!) to follow in Centenary Brochure.
WORLD BOOK DAY
This year World Book Day had a centenary theme as we asked children and staff to dress up as a character from a book written in the last 100 years. There was a super response and a good time was had by all!
MAYPOLE
Thanks to a kind donation by our partner school, Albany Science College, we are now the proud owners of our very own maypole! Y2 and Y6 have practised hard and can now add the skill of maypole dancing to their list of achievements this year!
'It's great fun making the pattern but it takes ages to undo. We always get it all tangled - Mrs Harrison hates that bit!' (anon, Y2)
NON-STOP DANCE DOWN THE DECADES CHALLENGE
What a HUGE success this was! Every single adult in school from welfare staff, kitchen staff, teaching staff, site supervisor to Mrs Minton herself joined with the children to make this a real day to remember. As well as being thoroughly enjoyable, it also proved to be very educational.
Dancing continued non stop from 9.15 to 2.15, starting with the whole school dancing to music from 1910 - 1920 in the hall, then individual classes continuing throughout the decades until we finally reached the 1990s. In our end of day assembly, each class showcased their favourite dance and we finished a very exhausting day with a disco featuring music from 1991 to the present day.
Special thanks to Mrs Harrison, Mrs Higginbottom and Mrs Hitchen for organising the day, to Mrs Jones and the kitchen staff for organising and preparing a very popular 'Dancing Dinner', to those children who volunteered to keep the dancing going during the lunch break, to Albany Science College for the kind loan of their (VERY LOUD!) sound system which meant that all classes could hear the music clearly throughout the day and to all the parents, relatives and friends who supported the event with their kind sponsorship.
We now know that we raised £1222,which will be split between the Centenary Fund and Alder Hey childrens' Hospital!!!1910 - 1919 - everyone in the Hall!
Y6 take over with the Roaring Twenties!
Y3 continue from 1930 through the forties.
Y5 ABSOLUTELY LOVED the 1950's!
Y1 surfing USA as they dance through the 60's.
Y2 gained a lot of Y6 friends as they discoed, punked and glam-rocked through the 70's!
Y4 in glorious technicolour as they take on the 80's.
Reception doing the 90's!
We ended the day with an assembly where each class showcased their favourite dance. Here's Y1 entertaining the troops...
The Locomotion counted us down to 2.30 and a HUGE cheer went up as we realised WE HAD DONE IT!
By all accounts everyone slept well that night - including the teachers!
Ladies' Night
This proved to be a very successful and enjoyable evening. There were fabulous stalls selling all manner of goodies, and you could even have a massage if the cheese and wine hadn't already relaxed you enough!
£300 was raised for the centenary fund, thanks to the generosity of the ladies present as well as kind donations from stallholders, the Coop and Mrs Hollinshead.
Everyone agreed that WE MUST DO IT AGAIN!
